The large building lower-left-centre (not apparent in the Manchester work) is the Basilica of Sant’Andrea, while the prominent building at the head of the town, below the summit of the mountain, is the Rocca Abbaziale abbey. The mountain in the background is Monte Gennaro (AKA Monte Zappi), also depicted in Annie’s Rain Clouds, Monte Gennaro and The Sabine Mountains from Tusculum. What appears to be a misty area left of centre in the Manchester work is simply a small lowland plain south-west of the town.

The private collection and Manchester Art Gallery works side-by-side and to scale. The exposed canvas of the new work is 82 x 71 cm, that of Manchester being 115 x 81 cm.

The view is of the town of Suviaco/Subiaco, thirty miles east of Rome, as seen from the Abbey of Saint Scholastica, one mile to the east.
