THREE WORKS BY FREDERICK SWYNNERTON, Annie’s brother-in-law who lived in India, were sold by auction at Sheffield Auction Gallery on 27th March.
They are his Portrait of the Reverand Charles Swynnerton, Portrait of Charles Swynnerton, and Portrait of a boy dressed as a page. The works are detailed on the Frederick Swynnerton page.

Also included in the sale is a Portrait of Maud Massy, wife of Rev’d C. Swynnerton, by Frank Brooks (1854-1937).

A FEW YEARS AGO as an aside during covid lockdown, I mentioned the work of a Los Angeles artist, Mabel Alvarez, which I happen to like, having initially seen one of her works, The Italian Model, on Carol Gerten-Jackson’s web site, c. 1996, which was being hosted by the University of North Carolina in the early days of the internet.
The work has just appeared for auction at Bonham’s, Los Angeles, 15th April – how I’d love to see it up close, but a little far to travel! – thankfully Bonham’s have provided high quality online images.

The model is identified as “Adrienne le Clerc … an actress, fashion, and live model … and friend to Mabel Alvarez, as well as Disney Animation Studios instructor Donald W. Graham … Adrienne married Disney animator Bill Tytla, who created the character of Dumbo after their son” (Bonham’s).

Gosh, they went cheaply – if I’d known, I might have bought one of them! I’ll have to keep an eye out for his works at auction.
