Mrs. Swynnerton, in an open-air portrait of a boy, “Master Charles Fenwick,” has tried to combine the methods of the realist and the impressionist; the boy is solid, but his dog is a phantom; the church behind him seems to waver in the breeze, and spectral flowers grow beside its porch. Thus the experiment is not a success, despite the ability wasted on it.
