Condition report from Toovey’s: “Generally in good condition. Craquelure throughout. Previously cleaned and paint a little thin in areas of the background. UV examination highlights some filling and overpainting to the craquelure, particularly to the dress and around the coral necklace. Canvas a little slack and stretcher lines are starting to show through. Gilt frame in fair condition but with some small sections of damage and loss. Provenance: consigned by a local private vendor who had inherited the work some years ago. The sitter was not known, unfortunately.”

Reeves and Sons, artists’ materials suppliers, were active under the title printed on the back of the canvas 1845-1940.
