A work has appeared at auction in Paris (FAAP auction house, Rue de Beaune, just along from the Musée d’Orsay) called ‘bathers’ or ‘nude study,’ of historical and academic interest because an inscription on the back identifies it as having been bought at the posthumous studio sale of 1934 – the only item specifically identified as coming from that sale that I can recall.
These are certainly experimental sketches, with the figures on the left and right being at different scales, nothing intended for exhibition. There is what appears to be a monogram, but it does not resemble anything I’ve seen before.
Many thanks to FAAP for additional information and images supplied.
