A previously unknown work by Annie, Portrait of a woman holding a dove, sold today at John Nicholson’s, Surrey. It is signed Annie L. Robinson / 187…, the exact year is difficult to read from the auction site images, but may be 1873.
It is, therefore a very early work, painted around the same time as Jebsa (1874). 1873 was the year Annie won a prestigious scholarship for a drawing she did – her Head of a young man shows the quality she was capable of around this time (and may have been the very picture which gained her the prize), but the quality of her oil painting was also remarked on.
