Visited the Musée d’Orsay, Paris, in March, hoping to see Annie’s Mater Triumphalis. A curator I spoke to was not familiar with the painting and to their knowledge it had never been on display. I tried to ask how to make arrangements to see the painting in storage, but they then said they couldn’t understand me (which puzzled me as we’d just had a perfectly good conversation in English), so no joy.
It is a well travelled work, having been exhibited historically in London, Manchester, Chicago and various Paris galleries. It is a shame it is hidden away in the Orsay vaults, but like most galleries the vast majority of their works rarely or never go on public display. Not planning to visit the city again in the near future, but if doing so advisable to make appointment well in advance by email or phone.
By coincidence, came across a postcard recently of this work, published by the Musée du Luxembourg, c. 1920.
